Most students don't want to think about summer courses heading into summer; they want to enjoy their summer vacation and not think about school.
Summer courses may be beneficial to some, including student-athletes, those who want to get ahead and graduate early, and those who are behind in credits.
“I think summer courses can be helpful in giving the students flexibility in the fall and
spring semesters but still keeping them on track to graduate,” said Courtney Ruggles, associatedirector of advising and assessment.
Sophomore Bailey Feeney said she took a summer course online last year that was a
requirement for her major. She said this helped her comprehend the material at a much deeper level because she had the ability to focus solely on that subject.
“I really enjoyed taking a summer course. It definitely was a lot of work at the time, but
looking back, it gave me more freedom and options in my schedule during the year, which is exactly what I wanted,” said Stonehill sophomore Mia Kenmore.
Student-athletes may want to take summer courses to lighten their load during their sports season.
“This can help athletes as sometimes they want to take a lighter course load to give them more flexibility during their seasons,” Ruggles said
.
The courses being offered at Stonehill this summer include a number of business and
communications courses, as well as criminology, healthcare administration, biology,
anthropology, arts, english, and many more.
“Being a student-athlete, my schedule can get pretty busy very quickly, but the
opportunity Stonehill offers to take courses in the summer helps alleviate some of that stress,” Feeney said.
In some instances, students may want to graduate a semester or two early so they can
enroll in summer courses and not have to go over credits during the fall and spring semesters.
“I also took it because it was a great opportunity to get ahead a bit on my major classes so I could easily add a minor in the future,” said Kenmore.
