Letter from the Editor: Keep an open mind

Dear Skyhawks,

Happy October, Skyhawks! It’s hard to believe we’re already more than a month into the semester.

This month’s paper has a variety of stories. A new esports room, the proliferation of electric scooters on campus, and new graduate programs are just some of the topics you’ll see in this month’s paper. We also have a feature article on page 4 highlighting ongoing concerns about the new dining program.

Last week, SGA held a dining town hall with leaders from Bon Appétit and Stonehill, where students voiced concerns about gluten-free options, availability of food, and workers’ comments about students’ portion sizes. This article was posted on our website on Sept. 30, but we wanted to print it as well due to the importance of these issues. As a student, it was heartbreaking hearing the negative experiences people have had, with some students even having allergic reactions and being sent to the hospital. It is my hope that College leadership is taking these concerns seriously, because students ending up in the hospital is unacceptable. The new dining situation has been a hot topic, and The Summit will continue to report on students’ concerns. You can always email thesummit@stonehill.edu with concerns or something you think is worth investigating.

The Summit is also continuing to report on the upcoming presidential election and state-level ballot initiatives. Reporting on these topics can be challenging at times due to a tense political climate and the historic nature of this election. I think I speak for many when I say this election was expected to be a repeat of 2020. However, things have certainly been interesting, with President Biden exiting the race after a poor debate performance in June, Vice President Harris being nominated as the Democratic candidate, and the Republican Party choosing Donald Trump, a twice-impeached convicted felon, as its candidate for the third election in a row.

While covering political topics can be difficult, especially with the amount of disinformation being spread online and negative attitudes towards journalists, our team is committed to fair and accurate reporting. It is important to understand the viewpoints of others and keep an open mind, even if you don’t agree with them. I also encourage you to regularly check our website for the latest political news, since this is our last paper before election day.

The next edition of The Summit comes out on Nov. 13. Until then, we will keep posting articles on our website and social media, so be sure to follow us @thesummitnews on Facebook, Instagram, Threads, and X. As always, you can contact us with questions, concerns, or tips on a story. You can also reach out to me directly at ctobin1@students.stonehill.edu.

On behalf of the staff, I hope you enjoy this edition of The Summit. Don’t forget to vote on Nov. 5!
