The Women’s Soccer team at Stonehill College is collecting victories in conference games, winning five out of the six conference games with two players awarded for performance.
Hannah Anselmo ’26 received her third award this season for NEC Prime Performer of the Week, and Allie Sougaris ’28 received her first award for the NEC Defensive Player of the Week.
“It’s an honor to be recognized,” Sougaris said. “I think it doesn’t come without the help of the people in front of me, and there are ten players on the field in front of me, so I think being recognized is a team effort.”
Anselmo said winning and performing well are related.
“But honestly, every time I think we’ve gotten a prime performer, we’ve won. So that honestly speaks volumes to me more; that we’re winning games and I’m performing, and it’s really affecting the team and helping the team and helping us continue this win streak and continue to win games,” she said.
Last year, the girls lost to Le Moyne College, so they knew to expect a challenge this year. This year, Stonehill won 3-0.
“I think last year was a really tough game against Le Moyne,” Sougaris said, “and for this year to come out and make a statement to them and defend our home terf was really important to us as a team.”
This win against Le Moyne was important as the team works to make the playoffs. The team must rank in the top four of the eleven teams to reach the playoffs.
“This year we came ready and we didn’t want to give up those three points we really needed. And they are also really important for us in making the playoffs.” Anselmo said.
What is rewarding about being on the soccer team? “It’s rewarding in the sense that I’m healthy, and I have the opportunity to play on this team and meet these people and have this opportunity, and just be able to play soccer and do something I really enjoy with people I enjoy,” Anselmo said.
Sougaris said everyone works together. “It’s a great environment, it is a really really great group of girls who are really supportive and all have a deep love for the sport and for each other,” Sougaris said, “And it’s been a great welcoming environment by both the coaches and everybody on the team.”
