Starting the Northeast Conference games strong, the Stonehill Women’s Soccer team picked up their first conference win of the season against Howard University. The Skyhawks came out victorious, leading their second shutout victory of the season with a score of 3-0.
The girls had difficult and competitive nonconference games, only winning two, which makes this victory over Howard University very motivational for the team.
“We knew they were going to be a good competition going into the game,” Skyhawks team member Erin Foley ’28, said.
However, within the first 50 seconds of the game, player Hannah Anselmo ’26 scored the first goal.
“Nonconference was tough, so I think the win for us starting off conference play was really empowering for the season,” Anselmo said. “It gave us that awareness that we are good enough to be here, and hopefully we can continue this throughout the season.”
Anselmo scored two goals and received one assist during the game.
As a reflection of Anselmo’s soccer skills, she received the NEC Prime Performer award two weeks in a row. While this accomplishment is significant, it is also a team effort.
“I think NEC Prime Performer is obviously a great accomplishment, but I really think our team is what put me on that pedestal,” Anselmo said.
Erin Foley, who plays midfield or forward, was the second player to score a goal in this game. This was “exciting” for her as it was her first collegiate goal.
“Just starting off the season in the conference with that win is just helping set us up for the rest of the conference games. I think it was just an exciting and overall successful game,” she said.
