Ultimate frisbee is on the rise

When you are walking through campus, you may see students throwing a frisbee on the Quad. Stonehill is lucky enough to have an ultimate frisbee team available to all students.

Joe Turenne ‘25, senior captain of the team, said “The tournament is Sunday, September 29th at the Sem fields. It will go on for most of the day.”

Logan McCann ‘26, a junior captain, said this will be her second year on the team, while Lizzy Gordon ‘25, a senior captain, is on her third year on the team. Both are very eager for this tournament.

“I am very excited for the tournament! I am excited to play against teams other than my own. Also, I love learning different techniques and skills from other players,” Gordon said.

“We’re really excited for the upcoming tournament. It is the first tournament we will be playing with the new rookies on our team, and it will be a great chance to learn and grow as a team. It will also be a good way to bond as a team while learning more about real gameplay. Although it is not part of our formal season (which takes place in the spring), it is a great way to start playing other teams and learning from it.” said McCann.

Most people may not even be aware of how Ultimate Frisbee is played. Since it is traditionally not shown on television, you’re going to need to know how it is played to understand.

“Ultimate frisbee is like football. Each team has their endzone that they are trying to score in. We need to work the disc up the field by making cuts and being strategic with each pass.

However, we cannot run with the disc. Once a player catches the disc, they have ten seconds to throw. Not throwing within the ten seconds is a turnover. Games are to 15 points,” said Gordon.

As many people are unaware of ultimate frisbee, it’s good to understand how the sport works, and to see why people may pursue the sport. McCann said she discovered ultimate frisbee at Stonehill.

“I started playing Ultimate at the beginning of my sophomore year. I didn’t even know that Frisbee was a sport, but I had been looking for something to be a part of. At the activities fair, I was approached by one of the girls on the team. I decided to try it out and it ended up being my favorite part about school. The girls on the team have built such a fun community to be a part of, and I have met some of my best friends. On top of that, playing Ultimate has been a great way to stay active and take a break from academics during the week,” she said.
