Stonehill Soars over Wagner

BY LAUREN MORAN

On the weekend of April 13, 2024, Stonehill Baseball came out on top over Wagner in a heated series. In the first game of the series, the Skyhawks came out on top with the score of 12-3 with highlights being Taylor Gaspar and Dylan Zemotel tying for the game-high with three hits in game one and the bottom 8th with the Skyhawks scoring six runs to take a commanding 12-3 lead into the final frame.

This win over the Seahawks means more than a boost in their overall and conference record. This series win propels Stonehill College to the potential opportunity to make the NEC Championship playoffs. Currently, the Skyhawks need to move up from their current spot at no.10 in the rankings to a spot in the top six. With the win over no.3 ranked Wagner, the first win gave the Skyhawks a push forward to reaching the playoff tournament.

With Wagner falling to Stonehill, the Seahawks were determined to make a statement in this series as they came out on top with the score of 6-5. Despite Gaspar’s sixth and team-leading home run of the season and Sam Parks and Trey Ciulla-Hall each driving home their 13th and 21st runs of the season, it wasn’t enough to overcome Wagner. Through these games heated statements were expressed towards the opposing team which set the stage for a fiery battle on Sunday, April 14 as the series was tied 1-1. Wagner came out hungry at first with a two-run lead in the first inning. However, Stonehill remained steady as they came back to tie it up in the 6th inning at 3-3. Nevertheless, sophomore Sam Parks delivered a textbook bunt and Conor Kiely hit a single RBI into left-center field, sending the Skyhawks towards a 4-3 lead. Wagner was unable to come out on top of the Skyhawks leading Stonehill to win the series of the weekend.

As the weekend came to an end, the Skyhawks remained determined and relentless leading them toward victory. Stonehill now remains vigilant towards their next conference games at Long Island University on April 19-21. The Sharks currently are second in the NEC making Stonehill hungry to take down another high-ranked conference team towards a berth in playoffs.
