Skyhawks run through Sacred Heart on Family Weekend

Stonehill ran through Sacred Heart for their first win of the season on Saturday, Sept. 21, with a final score of 35-21.

Stonehill was powered to victory by two standout performances by their running backs.

Stonehill started the day off strong with an opening drive touchdown from Senior running back Jarel Washington. After a quick stop on defense, Stonehill went right back out and added another touchdown, which was caught by transfer Junior Chase Miller.

Sacred Heart answered back on their third drive bringing it back to a one-score game. Stonehill got the ball back and made quick work of the Sacred Heart defense after a 72-yard touchdown by Jarel Washington on the first play of the drive, his second touchdown of the game.

Stonehill continued the onslaught by adding one more touchdown before the half, which was caught by Junior Tight End Cody Ruff. The rain kept pouring down as the halftime break came and it looked like an easy win for Stonehill, but Sacred Heart wasn’t going down without a fight.

Stonehill started slow in the second half and Sacred Heart took advantage. Sacred Heart responded with two unanswered touchdowns, and it was back to a one-score game. With under two minutes to go, Stonehill punched in their final score after a 31-yard touchdown by Junior running back Zavion Woodard.

Stonehill’s running backs both had incredible games, with Washington ending the day with 184 yards and two touchdowns. Woodard did most of his work for Stonehill in the second half and finished with 110 yards and a touchdown.

The next home game is Oct. 5 at 1 p.m. Stonehill will take on Wagner College at W.B. Mason Stadium.
