New club aims to elevate mental health awareness

A new club on campus aims to support students' mental health and well-being. This national chapter-based club elevates the talk around mental health awareness.

Active Minds was founded in 2003 by Alison Malmon, whose brother died of suicide three years prior. This organization is a non-profit that aims to educate and promote the outreach of mental health resources to people ages 14 to 25.

Its primary mission is to work towards a world without stigma around mental health and create a lasting change in the way mental health is talked about, cared for, and valued in the United States.

Active Minds focuses on a peer-to-peer approach. By creating a supportive climate for mental health on college campuses, Active Minds has a significant, positive impact on student health and well-being.

Talia DiMaggio and Nora Burke, both first-year students, are the co-founders of this club on Stonehill’s campus.

“I am hoping that Active Minds can serve as a safe place for many and encourage others to open up and get the resources they may be searching for,” said DiMaggio.

DiMaggio was an Active Minds member at her high school and always made sure to make the club's presence known in her community, ensuring everyone knew what they stood for. She said she plans to do the same at Stonehill.

The club is open to all students. “It is a safe space for all of any age, race, and identity and we are hoping for all that are passionate about mental health to join,” she said.

She wants to create a sense of community amongst the club members, as this is how she feels the club can reach more students around campus. The members will always have each other.

“Outreaching to others is important, but the ones volunteering to do that outreach are just as important and should be getting the support they need while supporting others,” said DiMaggio.

The club will meet bi-weekly in the library. If you are interested in joining, please contact Talia DiMaggio at tdimaggio@students.stonehill.edu for more information.
