Haunted Hospital takes first place in Haunted Sem event

Students packed the annual Haunted SEM event, where half of the SEM is turned into a haunted house, with each residence hall setting up its own themed haunted house area.

The winning themes this year included The Haunted Hospital placing first, run by BoDu, with the SEM’s Christmas Mansion in second, O’Hara’s Spooky Forest in third, Corr and Villa’s Crime Scene fourth, and Boland’s Graveyard fifth.

Madeline Mammone ‘28, an actor from the Boland Graveyard, whose role was to be chased by the Boland Graveyard’s resident killer, The Gravedigger, said she appreciated the high turnout.

“As an actor, it’s amazing! The energy is insane and being covered in fake blood is just a plus,” she said.

Adam Chisari ‘28, another prospective victim of the Graveyard’s serial killer, said the event gave everyone an opportunity to let their personal skills shine.

“The energy is amazing Everyone has found their place and excels at what they are best at,” he said.

Cecelia Moisan ‘27, and other students also praised the event.

“It was very impressive. It reminded me of horror nights at Universal Studios. It was hard to believe it is student-run,” she said.

Rebecca Antonio, ‘27, said the same and also enjoyed the program.

“10/10. I loved the different themes and the costumes were great,” she said.

Lauren Campbell '25, the BoDu Hall Council Programming Rep, recounted some of the logistics of their victory.

“A local urgent care actually lent us some of the hospital gowns for our theme. I wish I could tell you which one, but apparently those gowns are expensive, and lending them out is a big no-no.

One of our actor’s fathers is a retired mortician, so we also were able to borrow a mortician’s table, and that actor got to play a corpse,” she said.

Campbell was also pleased with the high event turnout.

“The energy inside the Haunted area was crazy. I actually lost my voice from screaming so much,” she said.

Campbell said it meant a lot to both her and everyone involved with BoDu Hall’s area of the Haunted SEM, and how much it meant to win the competition,

“We actually ended up winning $50, which essentially paid back all the money we spent on our theme. Winning the Haunted SEM was an amazing feeling because there was so much behind-the-scenes effort to create costumes and put together a scene that would engage with the audience. Seeing all our actors enjoy the experience made it all the better,” she said.
