The Stonehill Skyhawks Men’s Basketball team opened their campaign this past Monday with a win over Framingham State.
The Skyhawks started off hot, starting the season with a quick 10-0 run. The Skyhawks put on a fast-paced display of aggressive defense, anchored by backcourt guard tandem Amir Nesbitt and Josh Morgan. Framingham opened there, scoring at the 17:13 mark with a free throw, but didn’t do enough throughout the game to close the gap on the lead by Stonehill.
Josh Morgan was a standout in the first half with 15 points, alongside Todd Brogna with nine first-half points. Despite dealing with foul trouble early in the first half, going over the foul limit with more than six minutes left in the first half, Stonehill’s scrappy guards did enough to sustain the first-half lead.
Framingham closed the gap at the end of the first half, with a buzzer-beating three-point field goal to end the first half down 11 points, 40-29 in favor of Stonehill.
Morgan continued his hot start from the first half, opening the scoring with a wing three that sparked a 6-0 Stonehill run right out of the gate. Stonehill continued its relentless defense, forcing Framingham to make plenty of mistakes along the course of the second half, diving on loose balls and forcing multiple turnovers.
Morgan finished his strong performance in the first game of the season with 25 points, while Todd Brogna finished his performance with 20 points. Framingham’s Saint Jean and Makyle Hayes worked hard keeping their team in the game with 14 and 11 points for their respective team.
Stonehill ended up winning the game 81-62 and will look to rely on their tenacious defense to help them during the season this year.
