I think one of the worst parts about the beginning of each year is the introductions.
Every class is exactly the same. We show up, we pick a seat, then we do icebreakers.
What’s your name? Where are you from? What’s your major? Any minors? Living on or off campus this year? What year are you?
If you’re anything like me you will likely get follow up questions, because no one has ever heard of where you are from, or they think you are related to every other person on campus with the same last name as you. Maybe they think you’re older or younger than you really are.
It’s funny listening to people ask these clarifying questions.
At the end of the day though, getting that first week done feels like the biggest accomplishment in the world.
In the moment however, for an introvert like me it’s a very stressful week.
Personally, I’ve always felt like there wasn’t any need for anyone to know this much about me. It’s not like anyone is actually going to remember where I’m from or when my birthday is, right? So, what’s the point?
Name, class year, major. Those are the only pieces of information I feel like I’ve always needed. However, this is just how I feel this year. Thoughts change as you meet new people, make your groups, and you make your home here at Stonehill.
When I was a freshman, I tried a lot harder to meet new people and make friends. It was a goal I had set for myself when I first moved in. I was attempting to be less of an introvert at the time.
After a chaotic but wonderful first year I had found my people. Now, as a sophomore I don’t really feel the need to answer all these questions anymore.
But everyone is different. Some people like to get to know everyone they meet. There’s nothing wrong with that.
So, with all that being said, let me introduce myself. My name is Paige Bettencourt, I am in my sophomore year. I am from Fairhaven, MA. No not New Haven, CT. You are welcome to look it up on a map, I promise its real. I am not related to any other Bettencourt’s on campus. At least I think, we are a big family. I am an only child. I have a pet rabbit named Oreo at home, and a red betta fish named Chippi who lives with me on campus. I am a communications major and considering a minor in criminology. I do live on campus with some of the best people I was so fortunate to meet. I’ll be 20 on September 28th. Finally, I am your new opinion editor for the Summit.
Welcome back everyone!
