Tensions are high as the country awaits the results of who will be the next president.
This year, a woman is in the running and has the chance to make history by becoming the first woman president.
Females at Stonehill College have spoken about what it means to have the possibility of having a woman occupy the Oval Office.
Nicole Possamai ’28 said that if Harris wins, it will change the narrative.
“I would like to have a woman president because there hasn’t been one,” she said, “and I think it would be cool to be alive to see the first woman president ever.”
Julia Bartlett ’25 remembered being in elementary school and thinking, “'How have we gone this long without having a woman as president?’ So the fact that as a child had that thought and still thinking about it to this day is kind of mind-blowing, especially since it still hasn’t happened.”
The election is likely to be close as results start coming in, but Bartlett thinks Harris has a chance to win because “of how vocal our generation has been, and also the surge in social media and the support on there, I think has had an impact.”
Possamai personally knows a lot of Republicans who have switched their votes.
“This just proves furthermore that women can do anything men can," she said.
When talking about the possibility of Harris winning the election, Brianna Votino ’25 said “If Kamala wins this election, it will bring a voice to people of color, women, LQBTQIA+. This will show that our country is making strides to move forward to more of an inclusive and welcoming environment instead of going back in time and erasing the historical moves made.”
When asked why people might not want a woman for president, Possamai said how she thinks people fall into the stigma of being against women in power, but if Harris wins, she thinks the country will become more equal gender-wise.
“I think that a woman as president will be a step in the right direction for the United States and inclusion in America,” Votino said.
If Harris wins, Bartlett said, “I think that would be huge for our country, and hopefully with that, it means that people are starting to understand the impacts of their vote and voices and how much it means.”
