Family Weekend 2023 Recap

BY CHLOE TELLER

Skyhawks have settled in after the first month of classes, and the best time of year is underway. The beginning of fall is always such a beautiful time on campus, and this also indicates family weekend is just around the corner. This year, family weekend took place from September 30 through October 2, and there were many fun events perfect for the whole family. From the Blessing of the Pets to food trucks, our campus was buzzing with pride.

Friday, although there was rain, Stonehill still managed to have a strong turnout of events. There were many food trucks that were relocated to the upper commons. Inside the commons, there was an assortment of fun fall treats. Students and families enjoyed caramel apples, popcorn, and even a beer garden. This fun day included live music which kept Skyhawks in good spirits. Unfortunately, due to lousy weather, the anticipated 75th celebration fireworks that were supposed to take place on Friday night had to be canceled. According to Peter Ubertaccio, the Vice President for Academic Affairs at Stonehill, the fireworks are scheduled to take place at another time this semester.

The highlight of the weekend for everyone, however, is always the Saturday football game. Families come and set up tents early to begin their tailgate. Alumni, parents, faculty, and current students enjoy the atmosphere of talking and walking around while they get ready for the awaited game to begin. The Skyhawks took on Saint Frances and kept the crowd on their toes in a close neck-to-neck game all four quarters. Unfortunately, the Skyhawks ended up losing 15-10, but with every one's loving families in the crowd, there wasn't a frown in sight.

Sunday finished off Family Weekend 2023 with a bang. There were food trucks on the quad, including a delicious coffee truck giving out free coffee. The Blessing of the Pets was also a big hit, which took place at the top of the hill up by the Alumni Hall. The Blessing of the Pets invites the Stonehill community to bring their pets for a special prayer session and a blessing. This brought our community and their furry friends together for a wonderful event.

Another successful Family Weekend is in the books and students are already looking forward to next year. Between food, family, football, and fun, there is never a dull moment at Skyhawk Family Weekends!
