Career Development Center’s Resumé Labs Draft The Pathway to Success for Students

BY JEORGIA JAHUMPA

From the Suit-a-Skyhawk closet and LinkedIn Photo Booth to networking events and life chats, the Career Development Center sets students up for success.

“Students need to know how to articulate, written and verbally, their skills and strengths,” Andrew Leahy, the director of the center, said, “Some will completely under sell and overlook the great things they have done in summer jobs, or babysitting, summer camp, or working at Dunkin Donuts for 20 hours a week while they’re in school.”

Leahy said the resume labs allow students to format their resumés and cover letters or receive resources on how to build their resumés.

“There might be a myth that students have to have it all figured out when they get here, but that is just not the case. If you do, great, we can keep you moving. If you don’t, great we’ll get you moving,” said Leahy.

He said that the labs, located in Cushing-Martin, are beneficial for all students, especially seniors, to kick-start their professional careers.

The center started resumé labs after noting an increase in appointments for resume reviews.

“Resume reviews were well over 50% of our interactions with students,” Leahy said, “There’s only so many of us and students were coming in more and more for resume reviews.”

He said the labs were created to scale up access for resume reviews while also changing how the center coaches students so they can feel confident about it and make their own changes.

The labs are run by three trained student workers, or Career Ambassadors, who work with the students.

JJ White, ’24, is one of the Career Ambassadors at the center and helps students write resumes, learn about LinkedIn, cover letters, networking, Handshake, and other career-related services to their peers.

White said they started working as a Career Ambassador last summer while they were working for the Office of Academic Advising.

“During that time, I really enjoyed the work I was doing in helping advance my peers in their career journeys and decided to continue the work I was doing as a Career Ambassador,” White said.

As a senior, White said, entering the world after college is a scary thing to face, and having the ability to help their peers with their resumes is an important part of their job.

“In helping out the seniors finalize their resumés; I know I am also helping them put their best foot forward in ensuring they highlight themselves as part of the amazing and wonderful Stonehill student body and helping them to achieve the end goal of all the work they put in over the past four years here,” White said.

Resume labs are available on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays in the Career Development Center from 7 pm-9 pm.
