The Stonehill Baseball team hosted its annual blood drive this month and is continuing to save lives.

“We have been donating blood for close to 20 years and we have hosted our own blood drive on campus for 10 years. This year, with 40 donations, the American Red Cross said we saved over 90 lives,” said head coach, Patrick Boen.

While the team does it for a good cause, they also get to bring out their competitive side when determining who will donate their blood.

At the end of the fall semester, the team plays a 3-5 game intersquad series they nicknamed the Bloodbowl.

Captains pick their teams, and then the teams go head to head in a high spirited game and compete against another. The losers of the Bloodbowl are the ones who donate blood.

However it’s something much bigger than just a win or a loss, it feels impactful to see the bigger picture and do something for the community.

“It has created a great impact on our players. They realize they can give and help others, and that is an incredible accomplishment for college baseball players to achieve,” Boen said.

Freshman pitcher Jack Iannibelli confirms that the Bloodbowl is a beneficial thing for the team to partake in and creates a positive impact.

“It created a positive impact because it’s something that pushes us to do as a team. It brings us together as a whole. Even the guys who did not give blood came to the drive and helped work it. It shows that we all care about the drive and want to do good by helping others,” Iannibelli said.
