Winter Weather Affects Commuters

Clouds of air are dispensed with every breath, but they’re hard to differentiate from the plumes of exhaust that fill the driveway.

Commuter students at Stonehill have had to traverse the wintery mix of snow, sleet, rain, and sub-freezing temperatures more than anyone else to get to classes this semester.

“We haven’t had too much snow this year,” said Hayden Hegarty, a freshman commuter from Attleboro, Massachusetts, “but the school’s done a good job so far.”

His only qualm has been the subpar condition of Holy Cross Dr off the Washington St entrance.

Other students have felt the school could have done better in its little time weathering the conditions.

“The school didn’t adequately clear the parking spots,” said Caleb Tobin, a junior commuter from Holbrook, Massachusetts.

While Hegarty and Tobin differ in how they view the school’s management of snow and ice, the two can agree on one thing, the cold.

“It’s miserable in the morning,” said Hegarty, “I have no drive to go to school, but I power through.”

“The long walks to class have not been pleasant,” said Tobin.

The walks to class could be looking more enjoyable in the near future, as the National Weather Service projects daily highs to reach 53 degrees by the end of the week, and with Punxsutawney Phill not seeing his shadow Friday, February 2, it’s a hope for all students, commuters and residents alike, that an early spring is on the horizon.
