Stonehill College 2022 Convocations Looks Back and Forward

BY KIM HARRINGTON

Stonehill College’s hour-long Convocation Wednesday celebrated the upcoming academic year at the Sally Blair Ames Sports Complex.

Katie Garside, class of 2023, opened the ceremony with a prayer, then welcomed the student speaker, Stephen Cobbs.

Cobbs, a senior, introduced last year’s winner of The Louise F. Hegarty Award for Excellence in Teaching, Pamela Lombardi, an assistant professor of Chemistry.

Cobbs said that Lombardi helped him improve his grades and how her love for her students made him succeed and led him to now take an advanced chemistry class for fun.

Lombardi said that to succeed and achieve joy, keep working at what you’re passionate about and do not give up or compare yourself to others.

Senior class president Emily Hartford presented President John Denning, C.S.C. with a square head Ames shovel with two picks at the end.

Every year, the senior class selects a shovel from the shovel museum to present to the President at Convocation.

Hartford told the President she selected the shovel because of its many uses, noting it represented multiple resources the graduating class needed to use to get through their classes during the pandemic.

The 2022-2023 Louise F. Hegarty Award for Excellence in Teaching was awarded to Tracy Rosebrock, an assistant professor of Biology.

President Denning, in his address to students, faculty and staff, urged people to enjoy what they have.

“Let us try not to compare our progress and journey to that of others, which can rob us of our joyous achievements, and let’s celebrate the joy in others around us,” President Denning said.

Kerry Tyer, a senior business management student said Convocation was different compared with her freshman year.

“I think the biggest difference is how much more it means to all of us and how it’s the beginning of the end for us seniors,” Tyer said.

While everyone was welcomed to attend the ceremony, freshmen and seniors were the focus of the event.

Cecilie Elie, a freshman political science major, attended Convocation with her golf team.

"I enjoyed hearing about how Stonehill has impacted all of the seniors and how the college has prepared them for life post-graduation," Elie said.
