Stonehill has recently changed several aspects of their dining including increasing prices of menu items, changes in food at Gigi’s, and the meal plan.
Inflation has caused consumer prices to increase 9.1% during the past year, which is the largest increase in 40 years.
Kathleen Fitzgerald, the Sodexo General Manager, has been working on the new menu prices based off of changes in the economy.
“The decision to revise prices, which we made following thoughtful discussions with numerous campus stakeholders, was primarily based on the current economic trends,” Fitzgerald said.
There have been no changes in the menu at the Roche Dining Commons, despite confusion amongst students.
Dining Services ordered a surplus of certain items to help these shortages as students return to campus, Fitzgerald said.
Gigi’s, located in the Leo J. Meehan School of Business, changed their menu to make sure items were prepared quicker.
“We found that most of the orders being made at Gigi’s were ‘build your own’ meals and decided to embrace this trend. We also examined the ‘menu item velocity’ and used that to determine which items were our big sellers,” Fitzgerald said.
Dining Services got rid of their original four meal plans and transitioned to a single meal plan after discussing it with several campus offices.
The new plan allows students to add additional money to their accounts, and any unused money in students’ accounts is now refundable.
Morgan Whitlock, a sophomore at Stonehill, said that she does not like having to pay more for the same quality of food students used to pay less for.
“I think the changes in prices make it more difficult for students when it comes to having to pay for food on campus. The flexibility of adding more money is a good thing to be able to do but having to pay more for the same food we paid less for last year does not seem fair,” Whitlock said.
