Studying abroad has become increasingly popular among college students, and for good reason. It offers a myriad of benefits that can significantly enhance one's academic, personal, and professional growth. In today's interconnected world, the ability to navigate diverse cultures and understand global perspectives is invaluable in the workforce. From my perspective, college students should consider the option to go abroad not only because it could be beneficial to their careers, but also simply for the adventure.
Experiencing life in a different country exposes students to new languages, customs, traditions, and ways of thinking. It’s a challenge to students, stepping outside of their comfort zone and into something unfamiliar can be thrilling and scary all at the same time. However, the first hand exposure helps break down stereotypes and promotes empathy and tolerance, essential qualities in an evolving society.
From what I have heard from friends, Stonehill’s abroad program has plenty to offer and is adaptable to students' needs when it comes to travel and education. This is comforting to know as a student who is considering taking a semester abroad somewhere. Whether it's studying marine biology on the Great Barrier Reef, art history in Florence, or business in bustling Asian markets, students seem to have the opportunity to delve into subjects with a fresh perspective and gain insights from renowned scholars and practitioners in their field.
I think the best part of studying abroad is that it can promote personal growth and independence. As if living on your own at college isn’t enough independence, but living in a foreign country away from familiar support systems encourages self-reliance, resilience, and adaptability. From navigating public transportation to managing finances and dealing with homesickness, students will develop invaluable life skills that will serve them well beyond their academic pursuits. They also have the chance to form meaningful relationships with peers from around the world, expanding their social networks and maybe even forging lifelong friendships!
Furthermore, studying abroad enhances career prospects. In an increasingly competitive job market, employers value candidates with international experience. Studying abroad demonstrates qualities such as flexibility, open-mindedness, and the ability to thrive in diverse environments. With something so important to different job prospects, I think it is important that students consider this when devising a plan to study abroad. Sure, picking an interesting place is significant to the process, but making sure it aligns with student needs and career goals is also very important.
