OPINION: Trying Something New

BY CHLOE TELLER

Entering this semester, enrolling in the Intro to Buddhism class was a leap into the unknown for me. I started an academic journey without knowing what to expect. Unsure of what lay ahead, I doubted I would find some inspiration from the class.

However, as I settled into my seat on the first day, Professor Christopher Ives immediately took away my nerves with his energy and humor. His ability to effortlessly engage the class through his insightful commentary reassured me that navigating this unfamiliar territory of a new course would be less daunting than I had feared.

“My teaching philosophy is really just about trying to spark curiosity and support students in their experience with learning about other religions,” Ives said.

Despite my lack of prior knowledge about Buddhism and my usual struggles with grasping new subjects, Professor Ives' dynamic teaching style proved to be a game-changer. His passion for the subject matter and instructional approach not only captured my attention but also grew a spark of curiosity within me.

“My classes are not so much about content, but more so leaving the course with an enhanced mindset of curiosity. Now-a-days, students are more focused on asking themselves ‘what will get me a good job?’, rather than pursuing something that excites them. My advice for students is to find a passion and go for it,” Ives said.

I am excited for the upcoming semester with Professor Ives. In the short time I have known him, he has inspired me to follow my dreams, and chase my passions.
