Stonehill dining staff, students, and faculty gathered in the Commons on Nov. 17 to celebrate the career of beloved dining employee Patty Chiocca, who retired after 18 years at Stonehill.

“I just love the whole atmosphere working here, and you really get attached to the students, seeing them grow from freshman to seniors, so that is something I am really going to miss,” Chiocca said.

She began working at Stonehill 18 years ago at the bakery for the evening shift. She was then promoted to Bake Shop Lead and has remained with the staff ever since.

On the day of her retirement party, the Commons was decked out in retirement decorations, as well as thank you messages displayed on the TVs.

Throughout the day, students congratulated her on her retirement, and she could be found wearing a crown, and taking pictures in front of the various decorations with both staff and students.

Director of Dining Operations Cathleen Jordan spoke highly of Chiocca’s work ethic, and positive attitude towards students.

“She’s a ray of sunshine and such a great ambassador for dining. She remembers details about everyone, so there is going to be a big hole without her,” Jordan said.

Stonehill students echoed the same sentiment about her dedication to getting to know everyone and being a positive person to see every day at the commons.

“We come from our early practices, and she knows all of our names, and makes us smile when we see her, even though it’s so early,” Conley said.

Chiocca praised the students for giving her such a positive atmosphere to work in.

“The students are what have kept me here for this long,” Chiocca said.

Chiocca said that she has become an active fan of the Stonehill men’s and women’s hockey team and was always supportive of student activities.

She said she plans to travel and spend more time with her family and friends in her retirement.

“I’m looking forward to not having a 5 am alarm and being able to have the freedom to do whatever I want with my days. However, I am going to still miss the atmosphere of working here,” Chiocca said.
