A Stonehill Production to Die for: She Kills Monsters

Updated: Nov 7, 2022

BY KIM HARRINGTON

The acclaimed play production, She Kills Monsters, is making its way to Stonehill College’s stage this weekend.

This high-octane dramatic comedy is full of mythical creatures, ranging from ogres, and fairies, with a 90's twist to it.

She Kills Monsters follows a girl named Agnes Evans as she leaves her childhood home in Ohio. Her sister Tilly had an untimely demise in a car accident, which was Agnes's reason for fleeing away from home.

Agnes then discovers Tilly’s Dungeons and Dragons notebook, where she is engulfed in a world of mysticism, adventure, and imagination, which was once the place her sister escaped to when struggling.

Director Matthew Greene is taking Qui Nguyer's show to the stage, making sure to bring humor and pop culture along with him.

The play premieres for the first time Thursday, November 3 at 7:30 p.m. sharp. It is in The Hemingway Theatre, which is located in the basement of the Duffy Academic Center.

If you cannot make it Thursday night, then have no fear, there are other showtimes throughout the weekend.

The play is also happening on Friday, November 4 at 7:30 pm, Saturday, November 5 at 2:00 pm and 7:30 pm, and Sunday, November 6 at 2 pm.

She Kills Monsters is set in 1995, and has some similarities to the hit Netflix show, Stranger Things, despite this just being a coincidence.

Olivia Vezina ’24 is playing Agnes in the production, with Shannon Labuza ’23, playing her sister Tilly.

The play is not only action-packed but incorporates humor into it as well. Many intense battle scenes occur throughout the show, which students were prepped specifically for.

A costume designer, Chris Lowey, was also brought in to tie the show together and bring her vision to life to make the play more interesting for the audience.

It calls to all different ages, and young people through the similarities it bears to Stranger Things and older generations that would appreciate key 90’s references.
