Scooter epidemic comes to Stonehill

Electric scooters seem to be the new obsession on campus this semester, and students either love them or hate them.

The scooters have become an issue this year with students, mostly athletes, seen zooming through campus, reaching speeds up to 25 miles per hour.

An anonymous social media app that students use every day, YikYak, has many posts where students share mixed feelings about the scooters.

Some students are in favor of the scooters, while others believe that scooters on campus are a problem.

“For the most part, there is no need for the scooters. There is no need for people to pay absurd amounts of money. Everything on this campus is within walking distance. My only suggestion is that there should be specific scooter routes if this becomes more popular,” Jordyn Holohan ‘25 said.

Ashley Kendrigan ‘25 said she is not a fan of the scooters.

“These scooters are dangerous, and I do not see them coming, I think they are going to hit me every time they zoom past me,” she said.

Several students noted that the majority of the “scooter gang” are athletes.

Caroline Davey ‘25 recognizes athletes may have a reason to own these scooters.

“I am aware of the number of individuals on sports teams that own scooters. Because it is mainly only athletes, it may make it easier for them to get around, especially running to practice. However, the team that I recognized using the scooters the most is the baseball team,” she said.

Annie Renz ‘27 provided a different perspective on the scooters.

“At my old school, people buying scooters was considered normal and encouraged. Because I am a soccer player, it was considered normal for all athletes to own scooters. I decided to bring my scooter here with me to Stonehill,” Renz said.

“It is mostly a convenience factor for me. It makes it easy for me to get to class especially when I am running from practice,” she said.

Lily Roslonek ‘27 said she understands where the non-scooter people are coming from.

“I understand why people are not fans of the scooters. I feel bad that I always sneak up on them because I know I am scaring them when I try to pass by,” she said.
