Pet therapy Allows For Stonehill Students to Eliminate Stress

BY SARAH HERRING

Kaitlyn Gilson saw flyers about pet therapy sessions at the library and decided to give it a try.

“I certainly felt more relaxed after spending time with the dogs,” she said.

The pet therapy sessions sponsored by the Wellness Office and the MacPhaidin Library allows students to take a moment for themselves and to hang out with some adorable dogs.

The program seems to be working, as Gilson and others discovered the positive benefits.

Numerous studies have demonstrated the physical and mental health benefits of pet therapy, such as reducing depression, homesickness, stress and anxiety in college students.

Modern Psychological Studies reports that students are 94 percent more likely to seek out mental help with therapy than traditional one-on-one counseling.

Maria Sullivan, director of Health Services, said animals can help people relax. “Patting or holding a friendly animal can generate a relaxation and stress-reducing response, and some studies have demonstrated a lowering of heart rate and blood pressure after having a positive interaction with an animal," she said.

Since 2018, the Wellness Office and the library regularly schedule pet therapy sessions after quickly realizing students seem to love these unique study breaks.

Gilson said she loved going to the event.

Interacting with the dogs during the pet therapy session was a delightful experience. I found it to be a fun and refreshing break from my studies, and it brought a smile to my face,” said Gilson.

Students that attend pet therapy once are likely to attend again. Gilson is one of these students.

“I absolutely plan on attending another pet therapy session. The dogs are so gentle and friendly, and it's clear that they bring joy to everyone they interact with. It's a great way to take a mental break and recharge my batteries before getting back to work,” said Gilson.
